Day 39

Day 39 - Sending off a friend of 7 years to a new promising journey.
(2014)

Hong Kong would not be fun at all
if not for good relationships I have established here.
With that much time, people had come and gone from my life.
Some have stayed and remained
to become one of the fondest memories.

Almost 7 years ago, I stepped in here with a bunch of people whom now are more than work colleagues. One of them is the inspiring Ms. Kristy Rae, who have had her last day yesterday at work. Watching her wave the lat time made me reminisce on a lot of memories on how my journey of spreading magic all began. We came to Hong Kong the same year and she had been a very good friend since then. To that, I feel truly excited for her next journey after working for the happiest place on earth for 23 years. She never hesitated on sparing a smile within the day if you bump to her anytime in the halls at the workplace; she wouldn't hesitate on showing up in occasions that are special to you; and most of all, her humility radiates as she unfailingly gives you a genuine compliment or the most non-judgemental opinion. I admire her for her beauty, light and sincerity. She loves her job and sets a good example to everybody. And now, she's ready to take that leap to start anew of what still awaits for her. Good luck Kristy! My family and I wish you all the best!

2007 - Farewell party for the previous batch of face characters (Cavern, Lan Kwai Fong)
2008 - Junk Boat Trip (Sai Kung)
2009 - Julie Ewen's Birthday - loved your curls then (Aviator, Tung Chung)
2010 - took this while watching Disney on Parade (HK Disneyland - Summer)
2012 - my birthday (Marlyn's, Lan Kwai Fong)
2013 - my wedding with Hogan (Tin Shui Wai, Hong Kong)

Thank you for all these years Kristy.
Much love to you.

Day 38

Mayor Joseph Estrada arriving in Hong Kong
I would like to express thanks to the mayor of Manila for extending the apology from the Philippines all the way to Hong Kong because of the shooting 3 years ago. It was all over the news that the Philippines was sought sincere in apologising that the Hong Kong chief executive lowered the Black alert amongst tourists visiting Philippines to amber, he status right before the shooting happened. Amendments were done as for the victims' families to show support. It is believed that they were given an undisclosed amount of compensation which I hope are enough to help them start over again.

Hong Kong people are quite sympathetic to Filipinos here in Hong Kong, most especially, the majority, which are domestic helpers, who may have experienced some sort of discrimination and public maltreatment while no apologies were given by the Philippine president Benigno Aquino. This somewhat lifts up the anxiety from Philippine residents here in Hong Kong. Thank God for this move. Read here for further details of the Manila mayor's visit.

Happiness to all Filipino Overseas Workers here in Hong Kong and to their families.

Day 37

I don't know how to start but there's just a lot of things that I am so happy about on this special day. First, let me start with an overwhelming feeling brought about by people whom I know have graduated successfully. Over the top graduating as doctors.

Camille, the youngest in amongst my childhood friends
Camille, graduated from University of Santo Tomas (my alma mater), earning a bachelor degree in the field of medicine. Being the youngest in their family, she had fulfilled her dad's last wish before passing away. Together with her mom, Tita Baby and brother, Dee-Jay, happiness just overflows from this picture as they all give out a thankful smile. Congratulations to you.

Onto the province of Romblon, Mervyn Fernandez, another childhood friend, graduated as a doctor too. His twin sister, Jillian and older brother, Kuya Bon-bon came and visit me last year celebrating my 31st birthday revealing a small world right on my face with Ate Merly. I recently just found out that we were all connected in a special way. He wasn't able to come with them because he was in his graduating year and he was pretty much needing time to focus. Well-earned Mervs. Congratulations to you and I'm pretty sure your parents are so proud of you.

Doctor Mervyn Fernandez with his siblings

To my cousin Keanu, who recently just graduated too, congratulations and I am praying that you would be able to sustain having such greatness thru medals and honours until your college years. Wishing you all the best and I'm proud of you too.

Keanu Dalino Fontamillas
And amongst all of these kids, I am also proud of Renzo and Patricia Tan, my god brother and god sister for being named as Philippines best mathematicians. Amongst the entire 4th year high school, Enzo was awarded first and Patricia, 4th amongst all Grade 3. This article leads to where their names are enlisted.

Last but not the least, away from academic talk, I am truly happy that my husband is celebrating his birthday today. I know that not all are given such gift but he's strong, healthy and alive on this very day. And there's nothing else I would hope for but for him to stay as is as long as possible.

Hogan and Kyte thru the years.
Today is a very nice day. There are so many blessings experienced and though some are not directly affecting me, I am happy for the parents, friends and supporters who had made all of these events happen.

Hogan's birthday dinner. Thank you all for joining us making it special and memorable.

Day 36

REGINE VELASQUEZ
Songbird of the Philippines
Once again, Ms. Regine Velasquez visited Hong Kong Disneyland and my husband who had been one of her avid fans had texted me so happily that she watched his 12 nn Lion King Show. He was overwhelmed that I teased him that he got a nice early gift for his birthday.

Feeling my husband's joy and excitement gives me a sense of happiness too along with the rest of the Filipinos who delighted on her presence as the news of her visiting Hong Kong spread like wildfire over Facebook. She was nice to take photos with my co-dancers even though she is on a holiday, probably wanting to spend some personal time with her family. She was ready to flash that smile over that bare beautiful face. Owning a long space at WIKIPEDIA, it's admirable that she stays humble like that.

Day 35

Time for myself

Being married somewhat makes you appreciate your alone time.
And we all know that time, as constant as change,
can never be retrieved back.
So when you get hold of your alone time,
what do you do?

Well, let me see, I write, I play online and I read. These are just a few of the things I ain't allowed to do completely when my husband is around. I mean, of course, I don't want to give divided attention when he's around, right? (Don't do to others what you don't want to be done unto you. Hahahaha!) I also experiment more and I try new things when I'm alone most especially when it comes to cooking.
Dinuguan. Don't judge it as is. You've got to taste it first.

You see, there are delicacies and viands that my husband are eeked to try while I delight on them. To name a few, sauteed pork liver in soy sauce and vinegar, Dinuguan (pork innards cooked with pork blood), Kare-kare (pork innards and pork meat cooked in peanut sauce), Sinigang (the real sour one cooked with Tamarind mix - yumm!!!!) and Balut (boiled one-day old chick). Real Filipinos are the only ones who would be able to dig those.

Well, not this particular food that I prepared and took a picture of for my Day 35 because this is pretty legal to cook in the house. But, I had skipped lesser-than-supposed-to-be amount of salt to be put in my pork soup. Cooked with potatoes and Philippine bokchoi (pechay), I feasted on it for my baby and to celebrate Easter Sunday. My husband prefers the right amount of salt or perhaps... everybody would right? But that freedom to do what you want is priceless and the moment is worth embracing. No need to worry about any criticism. The only person entitled to such judgement is yourself and you're only allowed that certain time (which is solely your own) to do it.

Day 34

23 weeks pregnant

As I continuously expand literally and figuratively, exercising eases out the difficulties brought about by relaxin (the hormone released during pregnancy to help soften the joints to ease pelvic expansion for the growing fetus inside the uterus that may lead to weak joints and unstable gait). Swimming had made me more agile and it aids in efficient lung expansion for better oxygenation and for proper blood circulation to happen during my pregnancy. I loved how I felt afterwards knowing that I am on my 23rd week. I am obviously showing and people around me are alarmed that I may look bigger than expected. We checked with our gynaecologist and we were advised of normal weight gain. Though as we planned to deliver normally, I am encouraged to cut down a little bit from carbs as the baby's internal organs are now well developed. My baby will be needing more protein and calcium as it is developing the bones, muscles and fats needed to live outside the womb. Moreover, exercise doesn't just help me but also the baby in adapting to life easily having a healthy body and a sound mind benefiting from the endorphin release by the mom's nurturing body. To that, I am glad that I was productive today with my exercise.

Day 33

Giving up something during the Lenten Season
St. Jerome's Church, Tin Shui Wai

For the whole 6 years I have spent here in Hong Kong, it was all about work during most days that 90% of the population of the Earth are going on a holiday. Working in a theme park is difficult in such a way that the more people go on a vacation, the more you are in demand at the workplace. This year, I am truly blessed with ample time and for that, I was more than willing to give some of my time to the Lord by participating in the Way of the Cross and Lord's Passion on a Good Friday. It's been an awfully long time that I have given back some time to God. Well, here's the thing, this is my own way of sacrificing something I find difficulty of letting go.

Amongst Catholics during the Lenten season, there are a number of practices that are required to be done. And fasting is one. Let me help you refresh your idea of FASTING:

"Fasting is primarily an act of willing abstinence or reduction from certain or all fooddrink, or both, for a period of time.

For Roman Catholics, fasting is the reduction of one's intake of food to one full meal (which may not contain meat on Fridays throughout Lent) and two small meals (known liturgically as collations, taken in the morning and the evening), both of which together should not equal the large meal. Eating solid food between meals is not permitted. Fasting is required of the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 on specified days. Complete abstinence, required of those 14 and older, is the avoidance of meat for the entire day. Partial abstinence prescribes that meat be taken only once during the course of the day.
Pope Pius XII had initially relaxed some of the regulations concerning fasting in 1956. In 1966, Pope Paul VI in his apostolic constitution Paenitemini, changed the strictly regulated Roman Catholic fasting requirements. He recommended that fasting be appropriate to the local economic situation, and that all Catholics voluntarily fast and abstain. In the United States, there are only two obligatory days of fast – Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence: eating meat is not allowed. Pastoral teachings since 1966 have urged voluntary fasting during Lent and voluntary abstinence on the other Fridays of the year. The regulations concerning such activities do not apply when the ability to work or the health of a person would be negatively affected.
Prior to the changes made by Pius XII and Paul VI, fasting and abstinence were more strictly regulated. The church had prescribed that Roman Catholics observe fasting and/or abstinence on a number of days throughout the year.
In addition to the fasts mentioned above, Roman Catholics must also observe the Eucharistic Fast, which involves taking nothing but water and medicines into the body for one hour before receiving the Eucharist. The ancient practice was to fast from midnight until Mass that day, but as Masses after noon and in the evening became common, this was soon modified to fasting for three hours. Current law requires merely one hour of eucharistic fast, although some Roman Catholics still abide by the older rules.
The Catholic Church has also promoted a Black Fast, in which in addition to water, bread is consumed. Typically, this form of fasting was only used by monks and other religious individuals who practice mortifications and asceticism, but all Catholics are invited to take part in it with the advice and consent of their Spiritual Director."
- WIKIPEDIA

Now, don't get me wrong but I've always understood the bible in a way that it has deeper meanings to it. Not every word should be translated as is but it uses a lot of metaphors. Putting my understanding of fasting into practice, I believe that it should not be limited to any food intake but it should be applied to the one thing that is very hard for us to give up. I took "my writing" into halt for example during the Lenten weekend. I almost write everyday and it means to me that I may be able to express myself thru writing. Without writing, I feel suffocated or unheard. I feel that a day is wasted without contributing anything thru writing. I loose myself to it that I often end up sleeping late. I don't have a sense of time nor tiresome. Now, that's me.

For other people, you might be hooked up to doing a lot of silly stuff that you're so into it, you are doing it subconsciously already. Drinking soda (COKE - in particular, as it is addicting to some), smoking, indulging on happy hours, watching too much TV (include how much you watch PORN), stalking on Facebook, indulging on chocolates, anything that you really may have been indulging in remarkable amounts of time, effort and substance that aren't feeding your spiritual self at all. Fasting is denying the id (which is the mortal self) of everything that it wants. So don't limit yourself to refraining from eating meat. If you know yourself, you know what to give up. I am happy that I was given ample time and strength to give back to the Lord together with my husband. He was supportive of what I believe in despite not being a Roman Catholic. He is a Baha'i believer and they have their own concept of Fasting. But he was respectful of the Catholic way. He had some questions but I love his effort of coming with me having the same intention of giving back something to God.
